University Bukarest & FU Berlin Field Camp 2008

(by Karsten)

In summer 2008 students of the SEG Student Chapter of the University of Bucharest organized a summer field camp for students who wanted to train their skills in the acquisition and processing of near surface geophysical datasets. The target of applied methods including geomagnetics, geoelectrics, GPR (ground penetrating radar) and seismics were four Romanian mining waste deposit sites.

Ten students of the University of Bucharest and four students of Freie Universität Berlin participated in this project. The students were coached by three experienced geophysicists of the University of Bucharest, who also provided the measurement equipment. The processing of the data was done at the Institute of Geophysics of the University of Bucharest and finally summarized in a scientific report.

Our students really enjoyed this trip to Romania because with this project they did not only have the opportunity to train their skills in geophysical field work, but they also got to know a lot of interesting people in the field, who have become friends over the years.

We would like to thank the SEG Student Chapter of the University of Bucharest for the fantastic organization of this summer field camp. Furthermore, we would like to express our gratitude to the SEG Foundation for their financial support, which made this project possible.
