Nizhny Novgorod, 28 – 31 July 2014

The 5th International Geosciences Student Conference took place in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia after the European SEG/ExxonMobil Student Education Program. From 28th July until 31st July, 44 students from all over the world met in the Institute of Applied Physics in Nizhny Novgorod. Four SGS members participated in four days of talks, workshops and networking opportunities. After the opening ceremony and the first lecture the ice between student attendees was broken with snacks and drinks on the main floor.

Starting the next days with more lectures, oral presentations and poster sessions, SGS members Lennart Brüning, Jan Handel and Martin Prasche presented the methods, they wanted to apply during the joint field camp (read the article) which took place after the conference. SGS member Martin Prasche also gave a workshop with the topic "How the Past shaped the Present- A Journey through Geological Time in Oman". At the end of the second day we had a city tour and enjoyed Nizhny Novgorod with its interesting history, beautiful places and kind people.

One highlight was the SEG Challenge Bowl in Russia on the second day of the IGSC. 12 teams from different universities of two students each competed against each other by answering questions about seismics, non-seismic geophysics, SEG and geology. After each round of answering questions and buzzing only the best teams made it to the next round. In the end there was a pulsating finale, in which Martin and Ramona representing SGS and Germany competed against Bartosz and Paulina from Poland. After a close match Martin and Ramona made the second Place. Bartosz and Paulina went to compete against the world's best at the SEG Challenge Bowl Finals 2014 in Denver, where they made the 1st place.

We plan to play an even bigger role at the 6th IGSC in Prague, Czech Republic, which will take place from 13 to 16 July 2015.
