3rd International Geosciences Student Conference

(by Aurelian)

The 3rd International Geosciences Student Conference took place in Belgrade, Serbia. From 29th May until 31st May 244 students from all over the world met in the Continental Hotel in Belgrade. 18 SGS members participated in three days of talks, short courses and networking opportunities. After the welcome ceremony and the first lectures the ice between student attendees, society representatives and industry professionals was broken at a reception in the main hall.

Starting the next days with more lectures, oral presentations and poster sessions, SGS member Jonas Kuester presented his new 3D gravity model of Nördlinger Ries. At the end of each day we still had time to visit the city and enjoy Belgrade with its interesting history, beautiful places and kind people.

One highlight was the SEG Challenge Bowl in Serbia on the last day of the IGSC. 12 teams of two students from different universities competed against each other by answering questions about seismic, non-seismic, SEG and geology. After each round of answering questions and buzzing only the best teams made it to the next round. In the end there was a pulsating finale, in which Aurelian and Laura representing SGS and Germany beat Rahman and Gumru from Azerbaijan. Aurelian and Laura are now going to compete against the world’s best at the SEG Challenge Bowl Finals 2012 in Las Vegas.

In the end we were both exhausted and happy that we participated in such an amazing and forward-thinking event. We are proud to organize the next IGSC in Berlin and set a new standard in international student conferences.
