2nd International Geosciences Student Conference

(by Aurelian)

From July 8 to 13, 2011, ten SGS members attended the 2nd International Geosciences Student Conference (IGSC) in Kraków, Poland. The IGSC is an annual geoscientific conference organized by students for students under the patronage of SEG, EAGE and AAPG, which makes it something very special in the annual course of international conferences.

The 2nd IGSC was organized by the SEG Student Chapter Geophon of the AGH University of Science & Technology Kraków. 158 students from 16 countries gave more than 50 oral and poster presentations and participated in several workshops and two field trips. Further, the conference attendees had the chance to talk to petroleum industry professionals from ExxonMobil, Shell, Maersk Oil, Total, Geofizyka Kraków und Orlen Upstream about job and internship opportunities and receive advice on how to improve their application documents. The 2nd IGSC also hosted the SEG European Challenge Bowl and the European SEG/ExxonMobil Student Education Program. Beside the actual conference, the Geophon members organzed a truly excellent evening program which offered many opportunities to talk to the other attendees in a relaxed atmosphere.

Our trip to Kraków was not only a memorable experience for all its participants, but also a huge success for SGS in general. We presented ourselves as an ambitious and very active SEG Student Chapter and impressed the other conference attendees but also SEG, EAGE and AAPG representatives as well as Earth scientists and petroleum industry professionals with our commitment and our presence. And we plan to play an even bigger role at the 3rd IGSC from May 29 to 31, 2012, in Belgrade, Serbia.
